Assessment of the boar reproductive efficiency: physiology and implications
نویسنده
چکیده
The main objective of a boar stud is to produce a large volume of high-quality semen per boar in an efficient and safe manner. This includes: the management of the anatomy, physiology and sexual behaviourof the young boar, that influences its performance as an adult. Normal reproductive activity in boars is coordinated by the endocrine and nervous system. Abnormal activity in one or more of these areas can result in reproductive problems. For the development of the sexual behaviour is important to considerer plays and social conditions of rearing of penmates. Play in animals is common in mammals, frequent in young and is not oriented to satisfy the immediate needs and carries appreciable costs in energy, time and even physical risk. Although, play contributes to the development of several functions that take place in the adult. Sexual behavior begin as early as 1 month of age in boars; mounting activity of penmates is observed more frequently for males than females. Some authors emphasized the importance of social conditions during rearing, due to the sexual activity showed in pubertal boars.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Boar
The boar has a tremendous impact on the reproductive efficiency of the swine breeding herd. Depending on the collection frequency and insemination dose, semen from a single boar can be used to breed between 750 and 1000 sows per year. As a result, reproductive failure of a single male influences a large number of sows. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the basic aspects of male reproduc...
متن کاملThe Anatomy & Physiology of Sperm Production in Boars
Introduction The reproductive efficiency of the breeding herd depends upon the fertility of the boar. Male fertility is essential since the boar's DNA is the primary mechanism through which genetic improvements can efficiently be accomplished. In production settings, the critical event, which begins the reproductive process, is the meeting of sperm and eggs inside the female reproductive tract....

Background: Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) plays an essential role in reproductive physiology and follicular development. Objective: A new variant of the equine fsh (efsh) gene was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris) GS115 yeast expression system. Materials and Methods: The full-length cDNAs of the efshα and efshβ chains were amplified by reverse transcriptio...
متن کاملEffect of Metabolic Stress on Ovarian Activity and Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cattle: A Review
Reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle has been decreased over the last 5 decades despite significant gains in genetic selection, improved reproductive technologies and nutritional care. In high-yielding dairy cattle, the negative energy balance (NEB) during the first week post-partum adversely affects ovarian activity, mainly follicle growth and steroidogenesis. Circulating levels of non-este...
متن کاملEffect of Boar Presence on the Reproductive Performance of Sows
The success and efficiency of pig farming mainly depends on the reproductive performance of pigs. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of presence of the boar on the reproductive performance of sows, the feasibility and economics of rearing pigs of either sex together. Sixteen weaned Large White Yorkshire gilts, twelve weaned sows and two boars were randomly assigned to five groups a...
